Every day, over a billion images are uploaded to various cloud storage platforms world-wide. Another way to consider this: every few minutes, we create more images than existed in total a little over a century ago. We all have our photo account full of party snapshots, stop-action streams of sports plays and various interesting things throughout the day. Often it’s hard to find what we’re looking for later, as they are typically just organized by date. So, there they sit.

In this talk, we’ll discuss how to use Serverless, cloud Streaming Services, and AI to make some the images we upload searchable in meaningful ways. We’ll use a real-world example of helping a local school search a catalog of images for specific opt-in students and staff, allowing them to find images of specific participants based upon their name or other characteristics. Along the way, we’ll talk about zero-to-hero machine learning, as in I initially knew zero about AI and ML and with a little bit of time learned to build a powerful application like this. We’ll look at code and run a few demonstrations on a deployed application to tie it all together.

Jesse's background
Member of the Cloud Native Developer Advocacy group within the Oracle Cloud organization. He grew up in systems and OS development and spent several years working on Solaris at Sun Microsystems, later joining Oracle and moving to Linux development. Jesse is currently focused on the developer experience with cloud native technologies on Oracle Cloud including serverless and the Fn Project.
