SPECIAL MEETUP: Alexa - 'Angels & Hackers'

Featuring....

  • Ronan Guilfoyle, AWS Solutions Architect.
  • David Isbitski - Amazon Chief Evangelist, Alexa & Echo
  • David Low - Amazon Principle Evangelist, Alexa, Europe
  • Alan Kiernan - AWS SA Cation Consulting @ Ryanair Labs

Tonight we are delighted to welcome two of Amazon's senior Alexa Evangelists (Angels!) who are swooping in to help launch our 2018 season of AWS/Alexa Community events!

Both Davids will cover recent exponential developments in Voice AI, Natural Language Processing, human-computer interaction, deep learning, neural networks as exemplified by Alexa, Lex and other Amazon technologies. We'll look at the future of cognitive technologies and get to grips with Amazon innovations that empower developers such as Alan Kiernan and Sam Machin to participate in the transformation of entire industries through their efforts.

Our 'Hackers' this evening will showcase some of their most recent projects including an Echo Look / Security Cam hack using Raspberry PI (Sam Machin) AND the launch by Ryanair (Europe's largest airline) of its Lex/Alexa voice driven booking skill, which went live this week.

Aside from the great content, we'll also be giving away

  • AWS Credits (Ask a question and you shall receive)

18:30 – David Low - Principle Evangelist, Alexa, Europe

So glad to welcome David back to the Button Factory stage after his hugely popular talk & workshop in June. We are delighted Dave could take time from his busy schedule to join us this evening.

David Low is Principal Evangelist for Amazon’s Alexa Skills Kit (ASKs) in Europe.

With the Alexa Skills Kit (ASK), designers, developers, and brands can build engaging skills and reach millions of customers.

David's talk tonight will focus on the practical side of skill development. We'll also take a look at the future of conversational interfaces and best practices around application design.

David Low works with developers to create new and innovate experiences around voice and has held several technical leadership roles during a career spanning almost 20 years. Prior to joining Amazon, he created and led the Developer Relations team at Skyscanner. He has a passion for early adoption of technology, with a particular interest in digital media, and has a track record of working with partners to develop new products, including Skyscanner’s bots and voice services, and Scottish television’s STV Player

19.00 - BREAK - Food / Beer / Demo Stations / Networking
19:25 – Sam Machin - Alexa Champion, Hacker

Sam's talk will focus on Speech Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) within Alexa Skills.

Sam will also staff our IoT demo station which you can visit during the break. Here you can take a look at a very cool hack which Sam recently featured on his blog - namely using Echo Show, Raspberry Pi and Lambda to build a security camera:

The Echo Show is the first Alexa enabled device from Amazon with a screen. With this device Amazon introduced some new capabilities within the Sklls SDK particularly around video - one of these is the ability to view home security cameras such as the Nest and the Ring Doorbell using the command “Alexa show X camera” However these devices are all at the pricey end of the home camera market. - Sam Machin

19.55 - Alan Kiernan - Ryanair Labs

Alan takes the stage once more to bring us through the final steps involved in testing and completing the Ryanair skill which launched publicly earlier this week! Congratulations to Alan and his team on shipping this skill.

Alan will also discuss the functional and business inter-connectivity across Lex and Alexa, in speech and chat bots becoming a natural extension to any business.

No stranger to the Alexa Devs stage, Alan Kiernan is CTO and Co Founder of Cation Consulting; a startup solutions and professional services group operating across Cloud (AWS), whitehat security and performance engineering disciplines.

Cation is also an AWS Consulting Partner (https://aws.amazon.com/partners/find/partnerdetails/?n=Cation%20Consulting&id=0010L00001jTQpRQAW).

Having tracked the development of the Ryanair skill across multiple meetups (in Dublin and Belfast!) we finally have a finished product and so we're really looking forward to Alan's talk.

20.25 - Dave Isbitski - Chief Evangelist, Alexa & Echo

It's a huge honour for Alexa Devs Ireland and the AWS User Group to have Chief Evangelist, Alexa and Echo at Amazon with us this evening.

Dave will bring us through some of the latest Alexa functionality as we prepare to move deeper into an interactive world increasingly defined by Voice First Artificial Intelligence.

Dave will share his vision of how voice will continue to influence areas such as Smart Home, IoT and Gaming covering areas such as voice recognition or 'Voice ID' and the evolution of Voice UI design.

Dave has been a professional speaker, trainer and evangelist for over a decade. He has taught full-day courses on many topics including Mobile Apps, Cloud and the Web. He has helped launch numerous technology platforms, frameworks and programming languages across an array of devices at both Microsoft and Amazon. Dave is also an author for Lynda.com, can be found on twitter as @TheDaveDev, on his personal blog (http://davedev.net (http://davedev.net/)) and the official Amazon Apps & Services Blog ( http://bit.ly/amazon-blog )
