“The Next Heartbleed Is Coming. Are You Ready?”

AI, Post-Quantum Cryptography and the Race to Build Security That Can Keep Up

Frontier AI models are accelerating vulnerability research, giving attackers the ability to find and exploit weaknesses much more quickly than before. Businesses need to patch broadly and often, as vulnerabilities with Heartbleed-scale impact emerge more frequently. Other parts of the business need modernization too. Cryptographic systems facing post-quantum migration require the same visibility, ownership, automation, and capacity for rapid change. Investing broadly in these shared capabilities may deliver more lasting value than treating vulnerability response and each cryptographic transition as separate projects.

“70,000 Jobs a Second, 20 Lines to Fairness!” + Q&A

Fin runs has tens of thousands of customers running on a mature multi-tenant platform with shared SQS queues as the main message bus, processing more than 70,000 async jobs a second at peak. For years we dealt with the "noisy neighbour" problem using home-grown partitioning and separate fleets. Then "SQS fair queues" arrived, and about 20 lines in our shared SQS library put nearly every queue behind them. We'll cover what changed in our incidents, how we picked message group IDs (and where the obvious choice was wrong), the alarms we had to rewrite, and the cases where fair queues didn't kick in when we expected them to.

Brian Scanlan is a Senior Principal Engineer at Fin. He joined in 2014 and works on the platform's availability, performance, cloud costs and how its engineers ship.

Serena Fritsch is a Senior Product Engineer in Fin's infrastructure group. She joined in 2015 and spent her first years on the Intercom Inbox before moving to infrastructure, where she works on observability and keeping Fin's systems up. She led the rollout of SQS fair queues across Fin's Rails monolith, and has been feeding what she found back to the SQS team at AWS.
