Video-Assisted Referee (VAR) systems have transformed decision-making in sports like football and tennis, but powerlifting and weight lifting still rely entirely on human judgment, even at the Olympic level. RefVision is a first-of-its-kind system designed to support referees by providing impartial, near real-time video analysis to resolve contentious calls. This solution uses a fully serverless architecture on AWS.

In this presentation, Michael will focus on the serverless infrastructure that powers RefVision, detailing how services like AWS Kinesis, Lambda, ECS Fargate, and Sagemaker enable high-performance video streaming, frame processing, and inference.

Michael will share insights into the technical decisions and practical challenges the project faced including fast inference without GPU-enabled instances, and his opinion on potential future applications of serverless inference, in sports and beyond.
