AWS User Group UK Meetup #51

Details
Join us in November for 2 great talks. Firstly, we are delighted to have Mark Craddock (@mcraddock) who will be demonstrating his strategies for enabling the use of big data on AWS to provide business intelligence. Our second talk will be by Julian Wood (@julian_wood), who will be sharing his insights on building AWS Lambda functions from container images.
Talk 1:
How to Create ‘Situational Awareness’ and ‘Intelligence’ Using AWS and Big Data, With Use Cases From the Field with Mark Craddock.
Using a couple of use case examples from the public sector (Police and UN), Mark will demonstrate strategies for enabling the use of big data on AWS to provide business intelligence to improve an organisation's situational awareness. Organisations often fail to leverage data, and Mark will demonstrate that data is not the new oil and it's not a commodity.
Mark (Associate at eSynergy), contributed to the Cloud First policy for the UK Public sector and was one of the founding architects for the UK Governments G-Cloud programme. Mark developed the initial CloudStore which enabled the UK Public Sector to procure cloud services from over 3,500 suppliers. The UK Public Sector has now purchased over £10Bn+ of cloud services.
Mark led the development of the United Nations Global Platform. A multi-cloud platform for capacity building within the national statistics offices in the use of Big Data and its integration with Government data sources, geospatial information, traditional survey and census data.
Mark has most recently been supporting the UK public sector in the development of strategies to enable the use of Big Data and Machine Learning.
Mark is now the co-founder of a non-profit to develop training and certifications in the latest technologies.
Talk 2
Building AWS Lambda Functions From Container Images with Julian Wood.
You can now build AWS Lambda functions from container images! Attend this session to learn how it works, see it in action, and find out how you can combine the power of event-driven serverless computing and your existing container image tooling. This session covers one of the most requested new features for AWS Lambda: container image support. With container image support, developers can now package their Lambda functions and required dependencies using familiar container image tooling. You can also build and test your functions using familiar tools and services to analyze their contents and perform audits. Learn about the new developer workflow that is possible with this capability and how to potentially improve your continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
Julian is a Senior Developer Advocate for AWS Serverless. He work within the serverless product teams at AWS to help people use and love serverless more. He also acts as the internal voice of developers and builders to help make AWS serverless the best place to run applications.
