AWS User Group UK Meetup #55

We’re back! Wow, our first in-person event since Nov 2019 - we simply cannot believe it. We’ll also be streaming to our Twitch channel.

So come and join us for two great talks. First up we have the amazing Pom Singh Sabharwal (@pomsabharwal) from Halliburton - Landmark who will be taking you through their journey from moving legacy systems into the cloud. Next up is fantastic Toby O'Rourke (@tobyorourke) from FundApps talking about the benefits of using a cloud native architecture.

Talk 1:

Multi-tenant SaaS application in the Cloud with Pom Singh Sabharwal

Halliburton's "Landmark" is a multi-tenant SaaS application for the upstream energy market. This talk covers how their team migrated from a legacy platform to AWS, using open source and cloud native tools.

Pom has held various positions in strategy, product marketing and business development at Halliburton - Landmark, He was also responsible for Global Marketing and North America Business Development at Schlumberger for Geoscience & Engineering. Prior to his service company career, he worked for two large independent oil & gas operators on UK North Sea oil & gas development assets as Production Geoscientist. During his career at Halliburton - Landmark he worked in Europe, Middle East North Africa, and North America regions. His recent role was working with Halliburton Digital Platform Technologies, as Strategy & Business Manager for OpenEarth Community. His current role is Technical Sales & Solutions Manager for Europe, Eurasia & Sub-Sahara Africa Region based in the UK. He studied Petroleum Geosciences at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Talk 2:

The FundApps Engine. (Or, how we went from ~20 pet boxes to 20k head of cattle containers and have fewer sleepless nights) with Toby O'Rourke

FundApps is 12 years old. much of the platform dates directly from that period of time and is a monolith, with all the attendant challenges of scaling, maintenance and security management.

Over the last couple of years we've rebuilt the central part of our platform, distributing the workload across thousands of containers and leaning on major AWS services like S3 and Step Functions to deliver a platform that scales better, is easier to maintain and cheaper to operate.

Toby has been working in technology for about 20 years and CTO at FundApps for the last four of those. In that time he has led an extensive rearchitecture project, going all in on AWS services, dealt with a switch to remote working and seen the FundApps engineering team grow over 400%. But he's old enough to remember when servers had funny names and everyone did something slightly different with the same code.
