Details

Guy Bowerman (https://twitter.com/gbowerman) from Microsoft in Redmond and Microsoft Azure MVP Anton Boyko (https://twitter.com/boykoant) are in town for the Microsoft Tech Summit (https://www.microsoft.com/da-dk/techsummit/copenhagen.aspx), so we are hosting a Pre-summit meetup with them where they will present interesting topics from the wonderful world of Azure.

Azure VM scale sets – deep dive and roadmap

It’s been a year since Azure VM scale sets GA’d as Azure Resource Manager’s “infrastructure for PaaS”, and several new features have been added since. This discussion will look at what you need to know about scale sets, what they are being used for and what’s on the roadmap.

About the speaker - Guy Bowerman

Guy is a PM in the Azure Compute - Linux, Scale and Partner team with a primary focus on VM Scale Sets, Azure Resource Manager’s “infrastructure for PaaS”. He also works closely with OSS and compute partners including Canonical, Elastic, AppScale and VMware. Guy has worked in the in Xbox Live Search, and the SQL Server Cloud infrastructure teams, and before joining Microsoft was a database architect at IBM Informix.

Azure Resource Manager or how to create your cloud infrastructure by the power of thought

When you start working with some new technology it's always easier to start with some GUI. After you mastered it, you can switch to more "scripting way". This is obviously for the better, because now you can automate all routine tasks and enjoy your life. But, what if I will told you, that there is even more efficient way to automate everything?
During this topic we will go through several tools for managing your infrastructure in Microsoft Azure cloud. First, we will start with Azure Portal as a tool you can easily start using at the beginning of your journey to cloud. Then we will switch to PowerShell and Cross Platform console tools to manage your Azure subscription resources. After that we will switch to Azure Resource Manager. This is the most powerful way to manage your Azure resources. The main concept of Azure Resource Manager is to give you the ability to create a template which will describe all needed resources with all required dependencies, configuration parameters, etc. The declarative way has a lot of benefits: it's much easier for humans to read and understand it, the resources can be created in parallel and resource provision will consume less time, etc.
We will see a lot of demoes about Azure Resource manager during this session.

Azure Storage performance tips & tricks

This speech will consist of two parts.Firstly, we will talk about Azure Storage in general. We will talk about such Azure Storage services as Blobs, Disks, Tables, etc. and about tasks those services are needed for. We will talk about general recommendations and best practices about using each of those services. Then, in the second part of speech, we will go deeply into Azure Table Storage - service for storing structured non-relational data in cloud. There are a lot of myths around this service and we will try to address some of them. Also we will talk about "use the right tool for this job" stuff here. Most developers have a lot of experience with relational databases, like SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, etc. That is why when they hear "we need to store data", they usually start thinking about their favorite database engine. But what if this is not the right tool in the current case? What if we need to create, for example, high loaded text chat engine? Do we really need to have a relational database here? Sometimes developers are afraid of Azure Table Storage, but this is only because they don't know how to cook it.
