Back Bay is finally open!
The amount of beauty down here is unreal.
This is probably my favorite local hike. Actually feels like you’re on an adventure, instead of hitting the usual loop hikes around town. This time of year, it should be amazing.
Pay to park at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge at the southern most end of Sandbridge. 4005 Sandpiper Rd. $5 cash honor system or QR code. Actual False Cape visitor center is a 4 mile hike through wetlands & then a beautiful deserted beach another mile after that. Gotta cross 2-3 dunes. We’ll eat lunch on beach, soak in the beauty for a little & then head back. Return route is a little longer as we break off to a different section before reuniting on main trail back up to cars. 10-12 miles total(depending if we hit other scenic view dead ends).
I always give option if after lunch, you want to hike the beach back instead of the trails, go right ahead. It’s around 3.5 miles (dropping you down to 8-9 miles total)back up to the parking lot. I’ve never done it but assume it’s beautiful. I’ll lead back on the trails unless it’s unanimous decision.
All garbage gets carried out with you once we start. Pack a bag with water, snacks/lunch that helps you accomplish this easily. False Cape visitor center does have water refill, bathrooms & snacks available. We’ll pass twice. Bugs shouldn’t be bad this time of year, but sunscreen still recommended.
If you haven’t met me, I’m 6’3” with a long orange beard. Pretty recognizable. I got a black Cadillac that I’m hoping to have parked right at the trailhead left of Back Bay visitor center with trunk open. We’ll meet up there, have everyone introduce themselves & then we’re off on our adventure.
Hope to see a good turnout on what should be a spectacular hike, connecting with the remote natural beauty of the flat east coast terrain & waterways that will be surrounding us. In addition to the many birds, I’ve seen otter, turtles, snakes & dolphin on this hike numerous times.
This is 10-12 miles, around 20 minute/mile pace. Be ready. No one gets left behind, but out of courtesy, be ready to accomplish this if attending. I like taking photos & talking & have a led a few hikes down here before.

No dogs allowed. (Their rule, not mine.)
4005 Sandpiper Rd.
As far south as you can drive in Sandbridge.

As always…
What you carry in, you carry out.
Snack, water, proper attire, sunscreen & bug spray always recommended.
20ish min/mile pace is what we average.
All trails considered relatively flat & easy.
Weather cancellation would be night before since this is early hike.
