Transgender Day of Remembrance Hackathon

Details

[Trigger warning: this event relates to violence against transgender people and participants may be exposed to detailed reports which contain graphic imagery. Please consider this before attending.]

The Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), observed annually on 20 November, memorializes those who were killed or lost to suicide as a result of anti-transgender hatred or prejudice in the past year.

This non-competitive hackathon will be centred on the data collected by monitoring bodies and trans activists about relevant deaths, as collated for recent years on https://tdor.translivesmatter.info/. We are pleased to have the maintainer of this website as an invited participant.

We invite anyone interested in working on this data to participate. Tasks will be identified to match the interests and skills of participants, but may include:

  • creating visualizations/infographics for TDoR 2019
  • creating a dashboard to explore the data
  • researching reports to add photos for memorial cards or missing details
  • contributing to the tdor R package (https://github.com/CaRdiffR/tdor ), e.g.
  • updating the vignette
  • updating documentation
  • fixing issues with the static 2019 data set
  • adding functionality to retrieve data using the new API

Tasks will typically be worked on in pairs/small groups so that participants can learn from each other.

This hackathon is hosted by the Cardiff R User Group, Forwards (https://forwards.github.io/) and Rainbow R (https://twitter.com/r_lgbtq) as a pre-conference event for Cardiff satRday (https://cardiff2019.satrdays.org/). Although this is an initiative of the R community, we welcome users of any programming language or none!

There is no cost for this event. Refreshments will be provided.

Participants are welcome to join the Cardiff satRday dinner/social in the evening, details to be announced.
