Kayaking on Shadow Mountain Reservoir

Details

Let's go! Times flying and we haven't done much kayaking this year! One of my favorite places is on the Shadow Mountain Reservoir near Granby.

Shadow Mountain Reservoir, connected to Grand Lake by a gentle channel that flows under the iconic Rainbow Bridge, is a beautiful, nature-rich destination for water and wildlife enthusiasts. With boat ramps located at Green Ridge and Shadow Mountain Dam, the reservoir is accessible for all types of watercraft. The reservoir is especially attractive for kayakers and paddle boarders who can explore its small, serene islands—some open for exploration and others protected as wildlife habitats (be sure to check the signs). The islands provide a unique opportunity to spot local birdlife, including pelicans, cranes, geese, and osprey. Because the water is relatively shallow, it’s also common to see moose wading or even swimming around the islands, and on rare occasions, a bear may make an appearance.

Bring your own kayak, PFD and other gear to enjoy the morning before it gets too windy for kayaking (~1pm). Also bring your binoculars for some great birding, if you're interested!

Optional lunch after kayaking and before driving back to Denver area.

Directions to the Shadow Mountain Reservoir - 2+ hour drive from Denver area...Drive I-70 West to Exit 232 towards US Hwy 40. Follow to Shadow Mountain Reservoir. Exact meeting place will be provided once you RSVP. Allow yourself extra time to find the location, parking, and getting your kayak ready to paddle by 9am.

See you there!
