Hike RMNP East Portal Trailhead: Wind River and Glacier Basin Loop

The East Portal Trailhead is a moderate hike of 6.5 miles and 940 feet of elevation gain. The trailhead sits just outside of the Park. No timed entry required to hike on this trail. The hike begins on the Wind River adjacent to the Estes Park Campground at East Portal. From the East Portal trailhead, we’ll climb to the Wind River Trail, then on to the Storm Pass Trail and the Glacier Creek Trail. From here we'll follow the unknown trail to Sprague Lake. The loop finishes with 1.3 miles back to the parking lot.

What to bring: Please come prepared with appropriate hiking clothing, waterproof boots, backpack, snacks, and water. Make sure you have in your pack in case you need it - personal first aid kit, rain gear, hat, gloves, extra socks, and extra layers, etc. Always check the weather forecast for the trailhead before you leave home. Make it the best experience possible by being prepared!
Also bring a snack/lunch to enjoy at Sprague Lake where we'll sit for a while to enjoy the view before returning to parking. Think Moose!

Carpooling: Limited Parking so good idea to carpool. Arrange carpools from your neighborhood or decide on a good carpool meeting location.
Directions to the Trailhead: In Estes Park, follow US 36 West. At the junction of US 36 and CO 66, veer left onto CO 66 and head 3.3 miles southwest going past the YMCA of the Rockies on CO 66 till it ends at a circular loop where there is limited parking.
