Spike Hike/Snowshoe in RMNP - Bear, Nymph, Dream and Emerald Lakes
Details
Let's experience the iconic, moderately challenging 4+ mile hike in Rocky Mountain National Park starting from Bear Lake Trailhead, leading to Nymph Lake, Dream Lake, and finally Emerald Lake, offering stunning views of Hallett Peak and Flattop Mountain. RMNP weather reports of sunny and cold, 30⁰ and some wind. AllTrails reports snow packed trails requiring microspikes, but plan on carrying your snowshoes in case you need them! Read recent AllTrails reports to help you make a decision. Better to be prepared than not!
This is not a beginner hike due to the starting elevation above 9,000 feet, mostly snowy packed trail conditions and ~900 feet of elevation gain. Poles could be helpful.
Parking and Meeting Time: Arrive early and park in the Bear Lake Parking Lot. We'll meet by the Ranger hut at 9am to begin our snow hike.
This is a dog free hike.
Directions to the Trailhead: From Denver drive to Rocky Mountain National Park, Beaver Meadows Entrance. Allow time for the 10.5 mile drive from the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center up Bear Lake Road where it dead ends at the Bear Lake parking. Best to arrive early to allow yourself time to use the facilities and gear up. I plan to start at 9am.
What to bring...Colorado weather changes quickly! Please come prepared with appropriate hiking clothing, waterproof boots, hiking poles, microspikes, snowshoes, backpack and food/water. Make sure you have extra layers in your pack in case you need it. Make it the best experience possible by being prepared!
Bring food, snacks and water to enjoy on the trail. It's a long drive for many of us so it will be a long day. Bring hearty food and snacks - I always crave a hot drink and snack for the drive home!
