Hike Herman Gulch

Part of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, this is a hard trail starting at 10,400 feet. It's ~7 miles and 1758 feet of elevation gain for this steady, moderately strenuous climb to the alpine lake at 12,000 feet. Spectacular views and summer wildflowers are the draw for a slower paced hike! The initial part of the trail is quite steep and eventually opens up to the valley with meadows, views of peaks and the creek where it levels out. Know your limits and pace yourself!

We'll be watching the weather as afternoon thunderstorms are common and dangerous in the high alpine. Plan to be below the tree line by early afternoon.

What to bring...Colorado weather changes quickly! Please come prepared with appropriate hiking clothing, waterproof boots, hiking poles, microspikes, backpack, snacks, and water. Make sure you have rain gear in your pack in case you need it! Make it the best experience possible by being prepared!

Bring a lunch to eat on the trail and plan on lingering and exploring at the top for at least 30 minutes!

Carpooling - Arrange carpools from your neighborhood or pick a location to meet (Wooly Mammoth PnR). Parking lot fills early and fast. A new vault toilet is being installed and construction equipment may take up half of the parking lot, so arrive early!

Directions to the Trailhead: I-70 westbound, take exit 218, three miles west of Bakerville. Turn right into parking area.
