Second Sunday after Trinity: Cantatas 76 and 2

Details

Join us to explore the two surviving cantatas for the second Sunday after Trinity, from Bach’s first two cantatas cycles in Leipzig. Since the second cycle is almost entirely composed of chorale cantatas, we'll find in cantata BWV 2, a relatively austere work that recalls ancient compositional practices and sonorities, several quotations of the featured chorale melody. The other cantata, BWV 76, is the second work that Bach presented after he started his job of cantor in Leipzig, and it is designed to impress: it begins with a flamboyant chorus, is organized in two parts--each concluding with an instrumental chorus with trumpet--and features a variety of instrumental colors and moods.
