All About Biochar
Details
Darren McAvoy, biochar expert and Extension Associate Professor of Forestry at Utah State University, will demonstrate how to turn woody garden and farm byproducts into biochar, a water-retaining, aerating soil nutrient, through a nearly smokeless burn in a metal kiln. Rather than being released into the atmosphere, the resulting carbon is locked into the biochar where it’s held for centuries. As well as explaining the environmental and soil benefits of biochar, McAvoy, cofounder of the Utah Biomass Resources Group, will show how to make it in a simple metal kiln in a size appropriate to your needs.
Whether you have a working farm or a backyard garden that accumulates brush, biochar is an ecologically astute way to turn woody organic waste into a gold standard of soil enhancement. Alchemy at your fingertips!
