Backabush is heading back to Tenerife for a 4 night long weekend hiking break!

Tenerife is the biggest in the archipelago of the Canary Islands and has a wealth of amazing hikes to explore. These islands sit just off the coast of Africa and enjoy mild weather and sunshine throughout the winter months, in March the mountain trails are a pleasant temperature, a perfect time to hike on the island.

We will be staying in the vibrant town of Puerto de la Cruz in a fabulous 4 star hotel which over looks the ocean and is just 50m from the black sand beach. We can enjoy the hotels 2 outdoor pools, terrace bar and sea-view restaurant - all evening meals are included. In the evenings we can also check out some of the popular bars in the local town.

Our 3 hiking days will take us to 3 very different parts of the island to explore the deep 'Barranco' gorges and mountain trails of the east and the west as well as the volcanice crater of the Pico del Teide in the centre of the island.

SUGGESTED ITINERARY

8 Mar - Arrival and transfer to Puerto de la Cruz

9 Mar - Hike through the Anaga Mountains to a remote beach and traditonal village. This 14 km hike is stunning wander through the north western peninsula of the island. First we climb through forest and descend to the village of Taganana. Then the trail traverses a section a steep coast and returns via a deep and narrow gorge very typical of the islands geography. A beautiful and varied circular hike.

10 Mar - An ascent of Guajara 2715m on the crater rim of the Teide National Park. Tenerife is dominated by the towering Pico del Teide, a dormant volcano that sits at 3715m high (the highest peak in Spain!) The surrounding Parque National del Teide is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is formed of a vast crater with ancient lava flows and forests of Canary Pine. This rugged 10km hike reaches the panoramic summit of Guajara at 2715m, the 3rd highest peak on the island.

11 Mar - The Teno Mountains and the Risko Trail. Tenerife is blessed with 3 seperate groups of mountains and the eastern cluster of the Teno Mountains must not be missed. This 8km linear hike includes the Sendero de Risko, a steep but stunning trail clinging to the rocky hillside.

12 Mar - A morning in Puerto de la Cruz before heading back to the airport.

DIFFICULTY
This trip does not involve technical mountaineering but the hikes on the island can be quite challenging so you need to have a good level of hiking fitness cabable of walking up to 9 miles a over rough ground with up to 900m of ascent. A head for heights is also necessary in the mountainous terrain.
