This is an intermediate level trip open to intermediate and advanced skill levels! The hike Saturday will be 10.5 miles and the possibility of temperatures below freezing, at least overnight, is a distinct possibility.
This trip was suggested by Melanie. She also did most of the work to organize it including planning the route and making the reservations. Please make sure to thank her for her efforts.

Hike approximately 1 mile using the Stony Ridge Nature Trail to shelter #2 where we will spend the night.
To accommodate the wide variety of work and travel schedules there will not be a formal start/arrival time. I would however appreciate a note in the comment section closer to the meetup date regarding your estimated time of arrival. It is my intention to shuttle cars and make a water drop Friday night if possible. If there are several of us arriving close to the same time we could avoid hiking into the shelter, back out to the lot and back into the shelter again.
There is running water located outside the Forest Headquarters building near the front entrance.
Saturday 10 November 2012
Hike approximately 10.5 miles south on the Ice Age Trail from shelter #2 to shelter #3. Along the way the IAT passes near the Bald Bluff Scenic Overlook, sounds like a good place to take a break and a few pictures. When we arrive at shelter #3 well make camp and then hike down to Duffin Road to retrieve the water we cached there earlier.
Our best option for well water along the route is at the Horse Riders Camp just off the IAT.
Sunday 11 November 2012
Continue hiking south approximately 4.4 miles to the parking lot at Highway 12. Shuttle people back to the remaining cars at the Forest Headquarters lot.
An option for a little more distance Sunday would be to hike to the Whitewater Lake Contact Station which is another 3.8 miles for a total of 8.2 miles.
Sunrise will be approximately 6:40am and sunset approximately 4:30pm. Average high for November is 45 degrees F and the average low is 26 degrees F.
The shelter sites include a pit toilet/outhouse, a fire ring and if I remember correctly a picnic table. The shelter itself has an open door and windows and will be a nice place to congregate if the weather isn’t ideal. Well water in the Southern Kettle Moraine isn’t as conveniently located for backpacking as in the northern unit, planning on a water drop near shelter #3 to deal with that. The DNR limits site occupancy to 10 persons so that will serve as our RSVP limit.
The $15 per person trip fee will cover the following:
Shelter Reservation ($12.00/shelter) -- $24.00
Reserve America Reservation Fee -- $9.70
Meetup Fee ($5.00/night/person) -- $10.00
A couple gallons of water to cache near shelter #3
