Fremont Lake (Hoover Wilderness) 3D2N
Details
**UPDATED 9/1/2023**
7-day forecast is clear with highs in 70's, lows in the 30's; will continue to monitor. Message me with any questions.
Sep 8 - 10 (Fri - Sun)
WHAT: 3 days and 2 nights in the Hoover Wilderness, roughly 17 miles round trip. Conditions such as weather or water crossings may result in alternate destinations and mileage.
WHEN: Fri Sep 8 - Sun Sep 10. The goal is to be on trail by 12:30 p.m. on Friday and off trail by 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
WHERE: Fremont Lake out of Leavitt Meadows Trailhead (on Google maps as “Leavitt Meadows Trailhead and Campground, Bridgeport”), in the Hoover Wilderness, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest (east of Sonora Pass, before Bridgeport). Trailhead parking is the right side turnoff before the campground (when going east).
HOW MANY: Up to 4 (including me). RSVP to the waitlist, and depending on interest and experience, I will move people to the “going” list.
GEAR: Bring your own everything:
- Gear (pack, first aid kit, shelter, sleeping bag, etc)
- Appropriate clothing for the Eastern Sierra (warmth plus rain/snow protection)
- Food including bear canister (required)
- Water treatment
COST: $5 each; if carpooling, share gas. Square up at the trailhead.
LEAVE NO TRACE principles will be followed.
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest info can be found here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/htnf/
A California fire permit is required and can be obtained online for free in about 5 minutes (https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/).
Experience: My expectation is you are fully self-sufficient. Temperatures can vary wildly from day to night and thunderstorms with lightning, rain, hail or snow are always a possibility. Be prepared.
If you are uncomfortable with the weather forecast as we near the event date, please don’t hesitate to back out; I’d rather you not go than you be (or make others) uncomfortable.
Timing/Pace: My typical uphill hiking speed is around 1.5 mph, and my downhill speed is around 2.0 mph.
Carpooling: Strongly encouraged - there is limited parking at the TH. I live in Livermore and can take up to 3 passengers plus gear if you’re willing to get yourself to me.
Safety: You are responsible for your own safety. I carry a card with my emergency contact info on it, in case something happens and I become non-communicative. You should do the same. If you have one or more impactful medical conditions, please be prepared to disclose it if circumstances develop where it becomes relevant. I carry a satellite communicator, but technology is always unreliable in the backcountry and we are our own first help if something goes wrong.
Water crossings will be evaluated if/when encountered, and may result in a change of plans. Options will be diverting to another destination or finding a place to camp and explore the area, or leaving early.
