What we’re about

Group Values

Our group values a welcoming and respectful atmosphere where backpackers can come together to share their love of the outdoors. We strive to build a community that supports one another, fosters inclusivity, respects Leave No Trace principles, and embraces the physical challenges of backpacking. While we enjoy socializing, the focus remains on experiencing the natural world, practicing responsible behavior, and contributing to a positive group dynamic.

We actively discourage behavior that detracts from the experience, such as excessive drinking, entitlement, bullying, or harassment. We encourage open communication and the reporting of any misconduct to uphold our community standards.

To ensure the quality and integrity of our community, we reserve the right to remove members whose behavior or values do not align with the spirit of the group. By upholding these principles, we commit to maintaining a positive environment where everyone can enjoy the outdoors respectfully and responsibly.

Note: Please understand that due to recent experiences, we are highly selective about our membership and organizer roles. Ensuring the right fit is crucial for maintaining the group’s integrity and focus.

Welcome to Backpackers Adventures – A True Backpacking Community

📌 Note for Beginners: If you’re new to backpacking but serious about learning, scroll to the bottom for details on skill-building and potential entry into our community.

Who We Are

Backpackers Adventures is a high-caliber community for serious, experienced backpackers who are committed to adventure, skill-building, and camaraderie.

🚫 This is NOT just a trip list. If you’re looking to sign up for trips, show up, and disappear—this isn’t the place for you. We are a community, and engagement matters.

🚫 This is NOT for ego-driven hikers who prioritize speed over connection. We hike as a team—if your priority is racing ahead at the expense of the group, this is not for you.

🚫 This is NOT for Cliques.
✔ We are a community, not a collection of private friend groups.
✔ Members are expected to engage with the whole group, not just their inner circle.
✔ If you join, it’s because you want to be part of this group—not just tag along with friends.

Vetting & Membership

✔ Our WhatsApp group is for vetted members only—those who are actively engaged and aligned with our values.
✔ Entry is not automatic. Members must demonstrate commitment, experience, and respect for the group dynamic.
✔ Not all members will be invited to every trip. Participation is based on alignment with the trip’s goals, preparation, and teamwork.

If you’re looking for a true backpacking community—one that values camaraderie, shared experiences, and respect for the backcountry—you’re in the right place.

Who We’re Looking For

Experienced Backpackers Only – You should already be familiar with 3-season backpacking and have the necessary gear (or be actively acquiring it).
Self-Reliant & Prepared – You should be able to navigate, handle yourself in backcountry conditions, and self-rescue if needed.
Committed to Our Values – We expect a respectful, peaceful, and positive atmosphere. Heavy drinking, disruptive behavior, and a disregard for Leave No Trace principles won’t be tolerated.

🚫 This group is NOT for those who:
✖ Attend events primarily for socializing rather than serious backpacking.
✖ Prefer short hikes (1.5-3 miles) over true backcountry adventures.
✖ Avoid attending due to rain or needing to sleep outside.

Requirements for Membership:

  • Profile Photo: A clear profile picture of yourself.
  • Gear: You must own or be actively acquiring 3-season backpacking gear.
  • Agreement to Our Code of Conduct: By becoming a member, you agree to follow our group’s Code of Conduct.

What You Can Expect

📍 Our trips range from day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips in the Catskills, Adirondacks, and beyond.
📍 We also organize long-distance treks outside of New York State.
📍 Winter trips require winter-specific gear. (If you only have 3-season gear, you’ll need proper equipment before joining winter trips.)
📍 We do NOT allow car camping unless it serves as a base camp for a backpacking trip.

We prioritize safety, preparation, and teamwork. If this aligns with what you’re looking for, we’d love to have you join us.

📌 For more details, please see our Code of Conduct, Disclaimer and the seven principles of Leave No Trace.
