About the Author
Gabriela Cabezón Cámara is one of the most vital voices in Latin American literature today. A novelist, journalist, and environmental activist, her writing confronts colonialism, gender, marginalization, and repression with sharp intellect and poetic force. Her acclaimed novel The Adventures of China Iron was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize and the Médicis Prize, and in 2024 she received the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize for Literature for Las niñas del naranjel. Her work spans from intimate stories to sweeping, genre-defying epics — always with a fierce social conscience and a spirit of radical transformation.
About the Book
We Are Green and Trembling plunges us into the wilds of the New World, where Antonio de Erauso — once a nun, now a fugitive conquistador — pens a letter to his aunt, the prioress of the convent he fled. Caring for two Guaraní girls he has rescued from slavery, and on the run from the Spanish army, Antonio contemplates yet another transformation. Loosely based on a real historical figure, this baroque, queer, and surreal novel dismantles colonial myths and reclaims the power of self-reinvention. It’s a dazzling critique of conquest, religious tyranny, and gender violence — and a luminous story of survival, care, and radical metamorphosis in the lush heart of Latin America.
