BUY THE BOOK HERE

In this pop-up book club, we’ll look at three novels that explore life as a migrant, or a child of migrants, in the United States. We’ll look at themes of home, belonging, identity and language from three female authors whose families came from very different parts of the world – but whose experience as migrants in the U.S. was surprisingly similar.

Dates and titles:
March 30th - The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
Where do we belong as migrants? What is home? In this short, vignette-style novel, we’ll explore the concept of the house as an analogy for a safe place where we truly feel we belong.

May 18th - Americanah by Chimamanda Adichie Ngozi
Can migrants ever truly return home? After we settle into our new country, what happens when we go back to our old one? In this modern classic, we’ll explore what it means to “assimilate” and what happens when our roots keep calling us back.

July 6th - The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
Migrants often live split between countries, cultures and languages – and first-generation children inherit this weight from their parents as well. In this novel, which interweaves the stories of four mothers and four daughters, we’ll explore both the intergenerational differences and similarities.
