Sundo (Kouksundo, Bakdolbup)
Sundo is a traditional Korean practice of breathing and self-cultivation for the development of body, heart-mind, and spirit.
Rooted in Korea’s long mountain tradition, Sundo has been passed from teacher to student over many generations. It was brought into modern public life in 1967 by Grandmaster Chung San, who wished to make the practice available more widely.

Sundo combines breathing, stretching, movement, and meditation. Through regular practice, students learn to relax the body, settle the mind, and develop steadiness in daily life.
At the center of the practice is the cultivation of ki, the vital energy traditionally developed through breath and practice. Sundo breathing is centered on the danjun, a vital center in the lower abdomen.

Breathing is practiced together with a sequence of postures, movements, and stretches that help develop awareness, balance, and inner strength.
Sundo is sometimes called “the immortal Way,” not as a promise of immortality, but as a traditional path for cultivating health, clarity, and a deeper relationship with life.
This winter, discover a living Korean tradition of breathing and self-cultivation.

Sundo (Bakdol Kuksundo) practice may support:

  • Relaxation and greater bodily ease
  • Flexibility, strength, and vitality
  • A calmer and more focused mind
  • Greater balance in everyday life
  • Healthy aging and sustained well-being
  • A clear path of personal and spiritual cultivation

Breath is always with us. By returning to the breath, we can return to a quieter and steadier place within ourselves.

Breathe—and return to your core.
