What we’re about
Are you interested in exploring, studying and practicing meditation in the tradition of the Himalayan yogis or Jewish Kabbalists? A small group or groups will meet regularly to pursue spiritual growth through meditation. Our time will be split between exploration and study of the traditions based on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali or classical texts of Kabbalah and Chassidus such as Sefer Yetzirah and Bnei Machshava Tova, and the practices on that path, with the focus always on meditation.
Prayag is a Sanskrit word meaning a confluence or joining of sacred streams or rivers. I find the confluence of the Himalayan and Jewish meditation traditions an exciting area to explore. Each of us is also a sacred stream carrying our own spiritual experience and background. By coming together we create a group energy that is greater than, and transcends, what an individual can achieve. My goal for the Baltimore Prayag Center for Spiritual Growth is to create a kalyana-mitra (spiritual friendship) which provides support to one another along the spiritual path while learning and practicing together.
I am a student/initiate of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition taught by Sri Swami Rama and of traditional Kabbalah and Chassidus as taught by Rabbi Zalman Shachter Shalomi. I have been studying, practicing and teaching for many years and have been privileged to study with many outstanding teachers, including: Rabbi DovBer Pinson, Rabbi David Cooper, Avraham Sutton, Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, Dr. Daniel Matt and Pandit Rajmani Tigunait. My most recent teacher in Himalayan tradition, Swami Veda Bharati, suggested that I start a group “. . . of like-minded people walking on a pilgrimage in life.” I am happy to share what I have learned over the years, but my hope is that we will also each contribute so that the combined wisdom of the group will guide us along the way.
I am looking forward to discovering what develops as the group grows together.
In loving service,
Steve
