Meetup #4: Reactive Streams and Akka Streams

Details

Reactive Streams and Akka Streams

Speaker: Nitish Kumar (Twitter: @nitishk88)

Stream processing has become ubiquitous and Akka Streams, an implementation of the Reactive Streams specification, is one of the hottest kids on the block.

Reactive Streams (http://www.reactive-streams.org/) is an initiative to provide a standard for asynchronous stream processing with non-blocking back pressure. We’ll try to get an understanding of the Specification with some example implementations.

Akka Streams implements the Reactive Stream specification. This talk will showcase the essential basics and then introduce advanced features like Graphs, Composition and Custom stream processing. Akka actors are used internally, a basic knowledge of the actor model would help to understand the concept better.

We’ll use as few slides as possible and give more attention to live coding some trivial and non-trivial stream topologies.

Agenda

• Reactive Streams (30-45 mins)

-- Background and Specification

-- Protocol details

-- Example Implementation

• Akka Streams (90-120 mins)
