What does it take to succeed—and do we have to become a “taker” to get ahead?
For our second meeting, we’re reading Give and Take by Adam Grant, the organizational psychologist and bestselling author of Think Again, Originals, and Hidden Potential.
In Give and Take, Grant explores how the way we interact with others shapes our professional success. He describes three broad styles: givers, who contribute more than they receive; takers, who try to get more than they give; and matchers, who aim for an even exchange.
The surprising finding is that givers can end up at both ends of the success spectrum. Some burn themselves out or let others exploit their generosity. Others build relationships, reputations, and networks that help them thrive over time.
So how can we be generous while protecting our time, energy, and ambitions?
At this meeting, we’ll explore questions such as:
• Are you naturally a giver, taker, or matcher—and does it change depending on the situation?
• How can we be generous without becoming a pushover?
• How can we recognize a taker before the relationship becomes costly?
• How do these ideas play out in our everyday working lives?
We don’t have to agree with the book. Come ready to discuss what Grant gets right, what you question, and how his ideas hold up in the real world—yours and ours.
Everyone is welcome. Reading the book beforehand is encouraged, but you can still join if you haven’t finished it.
We look forward to seeing you!
