What we’re about
Bangkok Expat Adventure Club is a casual, social group for expats and locals who want to get out of the condo, explore the city, and make real-life friends along the way. The idea is to get to see some of the best things Bangkok has to offer and do it with people.
What this group is:
This group is for expats (locals are welcome too) in Bangkok (long-term, short-term, or just passing through) who want to discover fun, interesting, and sometimes random things to do around the city together. Think of it as a low-pressure adventure club: some events will be hits, some will be misses, but the point is to get out, explore, and enjoy good company rather than staying home alone.
How the adventures work:
- There will usually be 1–2 meetups each week, each built around a main attraction: a market, exhibition, show, neighborhood, cafe, rooftop, festival, or anything else that looks promising.
- If the main attraction turns out to be underwhelming, too crowded, closed, or just not our vibe, we will pivot and wander somewhere nearby, street food, bars, parks, or another activity that looks fun.
- Events are meant to be relaxed, friendly, and social; you can come solo, and you will not be the only one arriving alone. But, you are also welcome to bring friends and family.
Money and logistics: - Everyone always pays their own way for everything: tickets, food, drinks, transportation, entry fees, and any other personal expenses.
- There are no membership dues and no organizer fee to attend; any costs are strictly between you and the venue or service provider.
- While many places in Bangkok accept cards or QR scan, it is strongly recommended to bring at least a little cash for surprise street food stops, small vendors, or places that are cash/scan only. If you are not familiar with the Moreta Pay app, it's one of the few which allows expats to pay with scan like a local (businesses only, not person to person).
Who should join:
- Expats (and expat-friendly locals) who like exploring, trying new spots, and do not need every outing to be “perfect” to have a good time.
- People who are respectful, easygoing, and open to mixed groups of different ages, backgrounds, sexuality and gender preferences, and nationalities. This is truly a diverse group.
- Anyone who is looking for community in Bangkok and prefers real-world adventures over endless scrolling and staying home alone.
Expectations and vibe: - This is not a tour company and not a party-hard bar crawl; it is a social exploration group where plans can shift based on what we actually find on the ground.
- You join at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety, belongings, and decisions during each meetup and any after-plans.
- Come with curiosity, flexibility, and a sense of humor, and be ready to help make the night fun—even if the original plan does not go exactly as expected.
Please join this group to be added to the notifications for each new adventure opportunity.

What we are doing:
We will explore the Jim Thompson House Museum together, a beautifully preserved traditional Thai teakwood home that once belonged to Jim Thompson, the American entrepreneur who helped revive Thailand’s silk industry. The house is now a museum filled with Southeast Asian art, antiques, and textiles, surrounded by lush gardens and koi ponds that feel like a peaceful oasis in the middle of Bangkok.
Our visit will likely include:
- A guided tour (depending on group size) of the house, where you hear the story of Jim Thompson’s life, his role in making Thai silk famous, and the mystery of his disappearance in 1967.
- Time to wander the grounds, enjoy the gardens, and check out the art and architecture up close.
- Optional stop afterward at the on-site cafe/bar or a nearby spot for drinks or snacks, depending on the group’s mood.
Why this is a great first adventure
- It is an iconic Bangkok experience that many residents weirdly never get around to doing, making it ideal for expats who want to know the city more deeply.
- The house and gardens are compact but rich with details, so there is plenty to talk about without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
- The combination of art, architecture, history, and a bit of mystery (his unsolved disappearance) gives everyone something to connect with, whether you are into culture, design, or storytelling.
Money and logistics:
- Everyone pays their own way for museum tickets, drinks, and any food or transport before or after the event.
- Ticket prices and online booking are available on the official site: https://jimthompsonhouse.org/
- As always in Bangkok, it is a good idea to bring a bit of cash in case any nearby vendors or spots we visit afterward are cash or scan only.
Come along if you want a relaxed, cultural Sunday afternoon with other expats, exploring one of Bangkok’s most atmospheric houses instead of staring at four condo walls.
