Revealed in Simon Landy’s The King and the Consul, a little-known episode between King Mongkut and the first British Consul led to the current official attitudes toward foreign land ownership in Thailand, which came to govern the fate of the former British Embassy site here in Bangkok. Come hear the fascinating story from Simon Landy, author of King and the Consul: A British Tragedy in Old Siam, his book on British-Thai relations in the 19th century, and the culmination of his studies that had earlier produced related articles in the Journal of the Siam Society and the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong.

Simon Landy has been immersed in the worlds of British-Thai culture and business for over 40 years. After graduating from Cambridge University, Simon lectured at the National University of Singapore and Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn and Thammasat Universities before embarking on a career in the business world, primarily in property investment and consultancy. He has been chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Thailand and headed many enterprises in Thailand and elsewhere, and was awarded an MBE for services to British-Thai trade and investment in 2016.
