Notes and Synopsis
Harold Pinter is one of the most notable representatives of the so-called Theatre of the Absurd, a style that developed in Europe after World War II which aimed to describe the absurdity and futility of human condition. The original one act play tells the story of two killers who pass the time with meaningless discussions while awaiting their next victim.
Similarly to Samuel Becket’s Waiting for Godot (Beckett is possibly the most famous exponent of the Theatre of the Absurd whom Pinter admired and from whom he took inspiration) in the Dumb Waiter characters wait for something, but the atmosphere is much darker and violent and Godot, in this case, is represented by death.
In this adaptation other characters appear on stage, such as two women, who are seeking the murderers of their beloved sister and are determined to avenge her killing. And a mysterious man, seemingly the theatre’s handyman, who makes sure that everything in the theatre is running smoothly and the audience is well looked after. But there’s actually something suspicious about him...
