WE WERE ONLY FOLLOWING ORDERS: English Philosophical Discussion
Details
"We were only following orders." Organisations need their members to follow orders. But sometimes a member has to opt out. In our last discussion, we briefly touched the topic of the Nuremberg Trials. Nope, just following orders doesn't make your war crimes OK.
Thankfully, life isn't always about life/death decisions. Depending on your job situation, your employer usually won't order you kill and maim your neighbours. So what's the threshold: where does querulousness end to make way for defiance as a duty? And why does society sometimes cherish the rule breakers whilst relying on the majority following all rules?
Meet the three nuns on the run. After a life of strict obedience the octogenarians started to defy their superiors, ran away from their nursing home and broke into their old convent. Those disobedient spinsters selfishly stopped following the orders of their order - and the world fell in love with their unruliness: because it seemed to be in order. Maybe there's more to order than just being a lattice of rules, regulations and commands. Let's talk and find out.
After a short intro we'll dive into our discussion.
- The discussion is in English and you will need to have a high B2 level or above to participate. Attendance numbers are limited due to the size of the venue. If you can't come, change your RSVP before lunchtime on the day in case there is a wait list, and someone wants to come in your place. Looking forward to see you.
- There will be some beer and vermut, but otherwise it's BYOB: bring your own bottle and bring your own brain.
