What We're About:

Baraboo Writer’s Blast is about more than just meeting — it’s about writing together. We provide a space to learn, grow, and explore any medium of writing, whether you’re polishing a memoir, experimenting with fiction, or simply looking for feedback and support.

We meet monthly from 3:00–5:00 PM, a time chosen to keep everyone safe from rural evening travel and to make space for creativity in the daylight hours.

Each month, we take on a new theme or challenge to spark creativity. Right now, we’re focusing on The Hook — opening lines that grab a reader’s attention. Next time, we’ll explore something different. The goal is to keep our sessions lively, purposeful, and fun.

This is a collaborative effort: we write, we share, we encourage, and we help each other detail where we need support. Expect spirited exercises, creative risks, and a welcoming environment where every voice matters.

If you’re curious, restless, or simply tired of writing in a vacuum, join us. Together, we’ll build something real, supportive, and unforgettable.

We gather as friends—old and new—to create a welcoming space where creativity thrives. Every voice matters. We write with encouragement, acceptance, and a pace that ensures no one is left behind.
✍️ Workshop Focus
Led by local writer Windy Lynn Warren, this multi-session series explores the Hook, the opening line that grabs a reader and compels them to keep reading.
Last time, we tuned into the five senses through props, prompts, and quick-fire challenges. This time, we’ll push further: crafting unforgettable hooks that make readers ask, “What happens next?”
🎯 The Next Challenge
Topic: Types of Hooks. Pick one type and combine it with a sense to create your opening line. Bring it to share!

⚡ Action → “The icy wind clawed at her face as she sprinted across the frozen street.

❓ Question → “What secret could she possibly be hiding under that smile?”

💥 Bold Statement → “Everyone in town knew the storm was coming—except him.”

💬 Dialogue → “‘Run!’ she shouted, as the lights flickered out.”

🌙 Setting/Mood → “The scent of rain lingered in the empty hallway, heavy with silence.”
