Waldenburg castle and three-ridge hike

Details

Near the end of the summer hiking season, sometimes we get lucky with a mild sunny weekend. We'll take advantage of this to visit a beloved (and very cube-like) castle high over Waldenburg.

And if you decide to join, you better like ridges as much as I do because 2/3rds of it is pure ridge 😆

We'll depart from out meeting spot (in between the green ticket machines by the tram bays in front of SBB) at 11:05am sharp and board the 11:16 on track 15 (direction Sursee), and change at Liestal to the recently-renovated tiny train (11:34 bay 5, direction Waldenburg). At Waldenburg we'll do a hair-raisingly short 3 min changover to the 12:02 bus (B94 direction Langenbruck) and ride 5 min before getting off at Dürrenberg.

From there we hike east up to Kloster Schönthal, where we'll climb aboard our first ridge up to Schattenberg, where we meet the Geissflue ridge, which curves north and west to meet the Gerstelflue. At the end of that we find our castle. From there it's a short hike down to Restaurant Leue in Waldenburg for drinks.

The tiny train leaves Waldenburg at :07, :22, and :37 direction Liestal.

The hike is 9km long with 602m of ascent and 786m descent. It's getting late in the season, so layers are highly recommended. Good footwear is a must, and sticks might also help. There's at least one one spot that requires stepping across a small gap in the path/ledge, so you will need some dexterity and a touch of bravery to fully enjoy this ridge experience.

See you Sunday!
