Til death do us part? Love in the time of Tinder

Details

Fairy tales, like our hearts, tell us love conquers all. But does it really or is that confined to fiction like happily-ever-after endings? Love's all around us, we love our kids, chocolate and (sometimes) our countries, but can we really lump patriotism, maternal instincts and sugar addiction into a single category?

And what about our significant others? Is it realistic to stay together forever or should relationships look different in the era of dating apps? With couples no longer expected to raise kids together, what should we prioritise in a partner? Looks? Mutual interests? Love may well be patient and kind, but can also be fickle, fleeting and apparently a shocking judge of character, should it remain the lynchpin of relationship building or is there some sense in arranged marriages?

Has the Internet made love easier to find, delivered direct to our door without the hassle of clubs, pubs and extortionate bouquets or just commodified and corrupted it? For a society so committed to freedom of choice, we're remarkably willing to trust our love lives to the blind hand of AI. Maybe we should just take one more step, skip the middle man and date ChatGPT directly. Is this a viable alternative, could we ever live with someone who pandered to our every whim and wouldn't it be annoying if they were just too perfect?

Join us to discuss what love really is, the best way to find it and if it's really everything it's cracked up to be.

We invite participants to share their views in short, up to 5-minute statements, followed by an open discussion where we’ll discuss these questions in more detail. Whether you have a philosophical background or are simply curious about the topic, this is an opportunity to share your opinions.
