A Day Out in Greenwich

Details

Hi everyone,

Are you ready for a fun filled day out in Greenwich, London?
I have already announced this day trip on our previous day out in London so I have now put together an exciting itinerary for us.

Greenwich is a borough in London, on the banks of the River Thames, known for its maritime history.
There are a few important touristic milestones we are going to visit during a walk around Greenwich and being mindful of the limited time we have in a day I have picked a few which we can explore more in depth and are of great interest to many and they are also for free!

We are going to travel to Greenwich by boat from Westminster Peer.
Tickets can be bought on the day at the Westminster Peer. The single journey to Greenwich will last about 1hour and costs around £14.

First attraction we can admire in Greenwich just when we get off the boat is Cutty Sark, a restored 19th-century ship. We are not going to enter the ship this time but will admire it from a distance. It is the world’s sole-surviving tea clipper – a legendary ship that used to bring tea back from China at record-breaking speeds.

We are going to start our walk from Cutty Shark along the Thames along the Royal Naval College. The Royal Naval College is an extraordinary cultural destination in the heart of the Maritime Greenwich Unesco World Heritage Site. The entry is for free if we purchase a ticket to the Painted Hall. The entry ticket to the Painted Hall costs £16.50 but it is worth it as you also get the free access to the Royal Naval College for the whole year! The Painted Hall is a jewel of the crown and is known as 'Britain's Sistine Chapel'.

Next stop will be Trafalgar Tavern which is a pub with a fabulous riverside view where we can stop for either lunch or just a drink/snack before moving on to the next attraction which will be the Queen's house. Entry is free but we need to see if we have time to visit it.

Next to the Queen's House is the National Maritime Museum which we are going to visit. Entry to this museum is free.
Discover epic stories of exploration and endeavour that have shaped our world today. There are currently various exhibitions among which the Astronomy Photographer of the Year featuring dazzling space photography.

As next, we are going to climb to the top of the hill in Greenwich Park. Outside the Royal Observatory you will find a fantastic viewpoint in front of the statue of General Wolfe. We are going to take a hike through Greenwich Park to the Royal Observatory, travel through space and time and stand astride the historic Prime Meridian Line, where east meets west.

Continuing our walk back to Cutty Sark we are going to pass by the Village Market and the Fontain Food Court where we can buy some food and drink.

We are going to travel back to London Waterloo by the Docklands Light Railway. There is a train station close to the Cutty Sark. On the way to Canary Wharf we are going to admire the panoramic view of the Docklands. At Canary Wharf we are changing to the Jubelee line taking us back to London Waterloo.

This is a fully packed day my friends so I am very excited for this one!

Meeting point for all of us departing from Basingstoke is 9.20 am at Basingstoke trains station and we are taking the train at 9.38 am to Londen Waterloo.

Looking forward to a fantastic day out in Greenwich with you all !

Kind regards,

Olivia
