Theatre: Vulnerability, Meaning and Discovery

Details

All theatre practitioners bring vulnerabilities into the rehearsal room. The solution is to discover the meaning of theatre.

The Aims

This workshop is for people who want to discover (or re-discover) the meaning of theatrical art.

You want an artistic practise in your life.

You want to explore your creative talents.

You want the connections that theatre creates.

These are all made possible by putting drama into practise.

The Workshop:

This workshop will consist of small exercises that show you how to discover meaning in dramatic text, and how these meanings can be used as defence against the sensation of vulnerability while performing.

We’ll read short play text. We’ll discuss and analyse it. Then we’ll rehearse it, as if preparing for a performance.

We’ll work through many different activities but none of them is obligatory. If you want to sit something out, that’s fine.

Zero embarrassment, zero pressure and zero competition.

You have a right to artistic practise. You have a place to claim in the world of theatre. I want to help you do so.

The Workshop Leader:

My name is Lewis Hudson. I am 28 years old, and come from Chichester in West Sussex.

I have several years experience working in theatre in Germany. I directed a production of Henry V for learners of English with Theater Lübeck in Germany. I worked as an Assistant Director in Hamburg at the largest theatre in Germany, the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg (German Playhouse Hamburg). Previous to this I worked at Thalia Theater in Hamburg where I supported a production which involved a co-operation between professional actors and refugees from the Middle East and Africa. I was also a background extra, as a sailor in their production of Moby Dick.

I studied German at the University of Manchester, and wrote my dissertation on the dramatic theories of Bertolt Brecht.
