EXLORING IDEAS Art and Life
Details
'What is art' is a question that has been asked over the centuries, the answers to which have produced much disagreement and controversy. In this meetup we won't attempt to give an answer as that would be over-ambitious. Instead, having discussed aspects of art we will examine how the ways we approach art reflect the ways we approach life and whether they should. To do this we will use a selection of quotes on art as a springboard. These are followed by some questions from me.
For the purposes of this meetup, we limit art to painting only.
Note: There is no link to read or listen to. People can look up terms and/or ask AI questions. Me, I have done that but I have not asked AI about the meaning of the quotes below and will not do so before the meetup. I think we should all resist doing that and come to the discussion with our own understanding of them having considered them as best as we can.
To get us into the spirit of the discussion please consider your own answers to these questions.
How knowledgeable about art do you think you are?
How do you decide what kind of art you like? Traditional, modern conceptual or what may be called in between the two, eg Impressionism?
Do you always accept something you see in a gallery as art just because it's exhibited there?
1. Art is a line around our thoughts-Gustav Klimt
What do you think Klimt meant by this?
Is this an idea we should apply in life?
2. Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist. - Pablo Picasso
Do you think this is good advice to artists?
In life, once we know rules and laws, written and unwritten, should we sometimes break them?
3. The world today doesn't make sense. So why should I paint pictures that do? - Pablo Picasso
Is this a good justification for modern abstract art?
Does the way we deal with life make sense? What does 'make sense' mean exactly in this context?
4. In conceptual art the idea or the concept is the most important aspect of the work. - Sol Lewitt
Do you agree the idea or the concept is an acceptable aim in art, conceptual or otherwise?
What elements does such an approach to art may exclude? How important are these elements?
In life, should we be driven primarily by a belief in the importance of the principle (idea) before we act, or are there other things, perhaps more important, we should consider?
5. If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing. - Marc Chagall
Based on your positive responses to works of art, would you say these were to works of art created from the heart?
Why should works of art stemming from the head either not be as good, or not be created at all?
For your decisions on how to deal with life issues, do you think you are mainly guided by the head or the heart?
6. The artist does not see things as they are but as he is - Alfred Tonnelle
Does this, if true, make his/her art more or less plausible or effective?
In life, do we see things as they are or as we are? What are the implications of this?
7. Based on your own answers to the questions above, if you wanted to make a list of the main points related to art, what terms would the list include? And a list on life?
