HOTEL HAS A HAUNTED BACKGROUND
In 1982, the Le Baron Hotel was the subject of two articles written and published by the San Jose Mercury News. In January of 1982, Columnist Leigh Weimers was the first to mention the activity in Room 538. In February of 1982, Staff Writer Jack Sirica wrote a half-page article covering the story from the employee’s perspective.
In both articles, housekeeping staffer, Lupe Moncivias tells a story of a young woman staying in Room 538 who was found dead in November 1979, from a drug overdose. It was Moncivias’ job to clean up the room, and since that frightful day when she enters Room 538 someone or something pulls her hair and whispers her name in her ear. Housekeeping staff co-worker, Carmelita Sarianana recalls seeing the young woman in the room after her death. When Moncivias’ went to check reports of staff seeing a young woman upstairs, no one was found to be in the room. In both articles, it also states water faucets in Room 538 go on and off at odd times, and doors are slammed. One day, Le Baron Hotel Manager, Ralph Molter was told about screams on the 5th floor, and after investigating, and not finding anyone, he tried to return to his office and the elevator would not work.
Articles archived in the California room at the San Jose Main Library.
