**Hike Overview**
This hike starts in Clayton and goes to Black Diamond Regional Park where we will explore some lovely trails of the west side of the park. There are a variety of trails on this hike, everything from old asphalt roads to fire roads to single tracks. The scenery is equally varied, quiet pastureland, expansive views, and interesting canyons. About 30% of this hike is in the shade. There are multiple uphill and downhill sections throughout the hike, adding up to a total about 2954 ft of elevation gain. We will stop midway for a short lunch break, as well as take a few minutes to look around Rose Hill Cemetery. We will hike at a moderate pace, stopping at all trail junctions and gates to regroup This is not a beginner’s hike.

**RSVP**
If there is a waitlist, people who regularly hike the more difficult hikes with me will be given preference.

**Dogs**
Dogs are allowed on these trails, but be mindful of the distance, terrain, and elevation gain when deciding whether your dog would enjoy this outing. They must be leashed in picnic areas, around parking lots, and around cows.

**Be Prepared**
Please prepare with layered clothing, sunscreen and/or hat, sturdy hiking shoes/boots and at least three liters of water. There are no bathrooms or water available at the trailhead so plan accordingly. Bathrooms and water are available at our lunch stop. Poles are helpful if you use them.

**Cautions**
Ticks are common and one often finds snakes in Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. There could be poison oak although it is usually easy to avoid on these trails.

**Meeting Point/Staging Area**
We will meet at the Clayton Park and Ride on the corner of Peacock Creek Dr and Clayton Road.

**The Route**
From the Park and Ride turn R and take the sidewalk across Peacock Creek Dr and one block to the trail head. Turn R onto the Mt. Diablo to Black Diamond Trail. Continue 2.2 miles until turning R at the Cumberland Trail. After .3 miles, take the unnamed single track trail on the right. Continue up the hill and follow until rejoining the Cumberland Trail. Continue on the asphalt road until the Black Diamond Trails veers off on the left. R at Manhattan Trail, stay R and cross bridge and turn R Chaparral Loop Trail. Stay L to continue on Chaparral Loop trail, L on Lower Chaparral trail, R until Eureka Shaft, take stairs down past Greathouse Visitor Center. Keep R to picnic area for lunch break. Continue on Chaparral Loop Trail, L on Nortonville Trail, Stay R to visit Rose Hill Cemetery, exit at other end and continue on Nortonville Trail, L at Black Diamond Trail, R at Oil Canyon Trail, L on asphalt road, R on Cumberland Trail, L on Mt. Diablo to Black Diamond Trail, L on sidewalk and return one block to cars.
