Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie

For our April discussion, on the 23rd , we will be reading Foreign Affairs by Alison Lurie. Foreign Affairs is set among American academics in London, the novel follows two very different travelers whose romantic misadventures expose vanity, longing, and the gap between how we see ourselves and how others see us. Like Austen, Lurie writes a sharp yet compassionate comedy of manners: misunderstandings, social awkwardness, and unexpected relationships become the path to self-knowledge.
You will enjoy this novel for its ironic humor, keen psychological insight, and its focus on emotional growth rather than grand plot twists. Though more contemporary in tone, Foreign Affairs shares Austen’s delight in flawed characters, subtle satire, and the question at the heart of every great comedy of manners. Sounds like a really fun read.
