Tennessee has a rich history of opposition to evolutionary concepts. Wesley H. Roberts has been on the front lines of evolution education advocacy for most of his 38 years of teaching in public schools. Beginning with his earliest exposure to evolutionary concepts via a Christian fundamentalist upbringing, Roberts will share his own evolution from elementary school evangelist to science education advocate at the Tennessee legislature. While closely following the Tennessee legislative actions of 1925, 1967, 1973, 1986, 1996, and 2011, Roberts gives his personal testimony of what it’s like to teach evolution in the Bible Belt.

Wesley H. Roberts holds a B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Memphis, and an M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University. He is an award-winning biology / environmental science teacher who taught secondary science for 38 years in Nashville Public Schools before retiring in 2018. Roberts is a passionate Scopes Trial historian and shared his knowledge and personal experiences locally and nationally during last year’s Scopes Centennial Celebration. He lives in Nashville, TN, with his wife, Vera, and their dog, Dolly.
