Nothing possibly better for a car camp than a trip to Butte Lake in Lassen Volcanic National Park to climb Cinder Cone under a full moon.
This is an overnight at a group camp site, also including members of my Redding group, NorCal Wild.
The plan would be to get to camp on Saturday, Aug. 9, and set up. Then the evening hike to Cinder Cone which is about a 2.5 miles hike. There’s a half-mile climb with an 800-foot gain. Then back to camp for food and some tall tales. And we leave Sunday, Aug. 10, for home.
This northern portion of the park off Hwy 44 in eastern Shasta County is a starke contrast to the rest of the park. The camp is in trees but by the time you hike 2 miles on sandy trail to Cinder Cone, it all changes!! I refer to it as Jurassic era terrain.
We have Group Site B at Butte Lake. If you get in early enough, you can climb Prospect Peak nearby, generally rates as strenuous. Check in to the camp is 1pm and check out is noon.
There’s a $30/vehicle entry fee per vehicle. Park passes work of course.
