On this 4 day, 3 night backpack on the Olympic Park coast of Washington, we’ll be in both trees and on the beach and around sealife. This is also potential bear country. Whether we start at the north end or the south end will be determined by tide tables. In either case, we'll shuttle to/from Oil City.
We’ll use ladders with rope aids in some cases, similar to the rope ladders on the nearby Hoh Rainforest Trail, to transit between beach and higher trail. You’ll need a bear can. Slip a rain jacket into your pack. Expect to cross creeks and be in water otherwise. Some advise to bring some gloves to help get through the boulders and to climb and descend the ladders and ropes.
The itinerary has the corrected locations of the tidal obstacles. This itinerary is set up to go from Oil City to Third Beach. Due to tides we may start at 3rd Beach. We'll leave vehicles at Oil City though.
7am, 7/15:
We’ll leave from my house 498 Aquamarine Way Redding, CA
We'll head to a VRBO at Lake Quinauit to overnight.
7:00am, 7/16
Eat breakfast somewhere and leave for Oil City and the start of the backpack, or a shuttle to 3rd Beach to begin. This is written as if we are starting at Oil City.
We want to be on trail to make it through the tide waters at Diamond Rock. I’m told it’s about a mile long and has some boulder obstacles. WE NEED TO START TOGETHER AND THEN MAKE SURE ALL OF US ARE OUT TOGETHER. Then on to camp at Mosquito Creek. Total distance: appx 6 miles.
8:00am, 7/17
Lolligag our way to our next campsite at Toleak Point, about 4.6 miles on beach and trail.
8am, 7/18
We head 4.6 miles to Third Beach camp. We have two critical tidal areas, just south of Scott Creek and just north. We’ll need to get through both between 12pm and 3:30pm. They are about 1.25 miles apart. WE NEED TO START TOGETHER AT EACH OF THE WATER OBSTACLES AND BE SURE ALL OF US GET THROUGH EACH ONE TOGETHER.
8am, 7/19
We hike out the last 1.5 miles to the 3rd Beach TH and connect with our shuttle to Oil City, vehicles and home. The shuttle will meet us at 7:45am and leave for Oil City at 8am. We will need to head out on the trail by 5:45am (sunrise is 5:20).
Costs will be for the shuttle abou $50/person and $15/person permit. Unknown is the cost of the VRBO for the night of 7/15.
This schedule will be adjusted for timing to get through the high tides.
