SATURDAY 9/30 - online
9 am Welcome
9:30 Eric Huang- 9 Steps to Effective Communication
Learn by doing. We will use Nine Skills for Effective Communication to explore and practice the elements of connecting communication so you can use them when you need them.
11 am Michelle Leah Gomez- Without Coercion, Force, Bribery or Even Praise: An Introduction to Nonviolent Communication Parenting
What does it mean to consider your child to be a fully formed, whole human being from birth – not needing to be fixed through coercion, force, bribery or even simple praise?
12:30 Kristin Masters- 4 Ways of Listening and Understanding Yourself
Sometimes called 4 ears, this approach is one of Kristin's favorite ways to "teach NVC." We will work with your examples of hard-to-hear messages, exploring the ways of hearing that influence our reactivity and relationality. You might expect to walk away with insights about how you (and others in your life) interpret messages, and how to shift to the 3rd and 4th chair with the help of empathic approaches.
2 pm Caren Camblin - Shifting the Narrative: Journaling with NVC
Sometimes journaling doesn’t “work” because we end up telling ourselves the same stories over and over again without feeling any sort of movement.
3:30 Bar Lowenberg- NVC & Spirituality
“NVC and Spirituality” explores the spiritual roots of NVC
SUNDAY 10/1 - in-person, westside Santa Cruz location (address provided upon registration)
10 am Welcome Rick Longinotti & Jean Morrison
10:15 Jean Morrison - NVC Interactive Connections
We’ll start the day with a series of NVC exercises with the full group, and in rotating pairs and triads that are easy, connecting…and practical for learning and applying NVC in real life. For all levels of NVC experience, including newbies!
11:30 Aviva & Rick Longinotti - NVC in a Couples Conflict
Aviva and Rick will role play conflicts that many couples experience and try to use NVC to resolve them.
11:30 Kristin Masters - Expanding on Empathy - Resonant Language
Empathy, the language of feelings and needs, is central to the practice of nonviolent communication. But there are other resonant languages that enrich our sense of being "grokked". Kristin will draw on the relational neurobiology introduced to her by Sarah Peyton to invite us into playing with poetic and visual metaphors, impossible dreams, movement and more. These will give you more tools to light up your (mostly right) relational brain, and ways to reach toward others so that they "feel understood". Really, Kristin can't imagine living without this work, so come prepared to play! Suitable for all levels of NVC experience.
12:45 Lunch
2 pm Rick Longinotti - Can NVC Work Here? Interview with John Malkin
Rick Longinotti interviews John Malkin about the challenges of integrating NVC into his life as a journalist, author, husband, and father. John is the author of
- Sounds of Freedom: Musicians on Social Change and Spirituality Forward by Thich Nhat Hahn
- The Only Alternative: Christian Nonviolent Peacemakers in America co-author Alan Nelson
- Punk Revolution! An Oral History of Punk Rock Politics and Activism
- John has a radio show at KZSC: Transformation Highway, noon on Thursdays
2 pm Jean Morrison - Group GROK for Empathy, Clarity, and Celebration
Using GROK feelings and needs cards, we’ll play Empathy Poker. Known and loved around the world this is an easy way to experience honest expression, being heard, clarity and self-compassion, giving and receiving empathy, and celebration/acknowledgment.
3:15 Kristin Masters - Time Travel Empathy
Wouldn't it be sweet if we could travel back in time to give ourselves empathy for challenges in our past? What? We can? Kristin will walk us thru the set-up to ready us for effective and healing resonance for our past selves, bringing resources in, changing our brain and our relationship to events that were hard on us. Kristin gratefully acknowledges Sarah Peyton for her methodologies. This session is better suited to those who have a firm grasp on the principles and practices of NVC.
3:15 Eric Huang - Role Plays
After a Brief Q&A, bring your situation with Eric for a role-play
4:30 Harvesting, Closing
