# Help Rodney Keep Dancing: Support Rodney’s Battle Against Liver Cancer
For over 35 years, my life has been defined by rhythm, movement, and the incredible community we’ve built together. From the Bay Area to stages across the globe, I’ve dedicated my career to promoting the culture of Bachata and Salsa. Today, I am facing a challenge that requires a different kind of strength—one I never knew I’d need.
### The Diagnosis & The Fight
My journey took a sudden turn after an emergency room visit for severe symptoms. What I hoped was temporary was diagnosed as Stage 2 Liver Cancer.
I have recently completed chemotherapy, but the road remains difficult. My liver has sustained significant damage, and we are now in a cycle of "maintenance and monitoring." Currently, my most realistic and affordable path is SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy). Essentially, whenever a new tumor appears on my liver, SBRT "zaps" it out. However, each of these treatments costs roughly $19,000.
### The Reality of a Transplant
In a worst-case scenario, I may eventually require a dual liver and kidney transplant. The reality of that path is daunting: the cost can exceed $3 million, and the criteria for the transplant list are incredibly strict. While I pray it doesn't come to that, I have to be honest about the hurdles ahead.
### The Financial Burden
I have always believed that hospitality is a way of life, and I find it incredibly difficult to ask for help without an exchange. I’ve spent my life giving to the dance floor, and asking for help now goes against my nature. But the numbers are simply too high to carry alone:
- Insurance Gaps: My previous coverage and government subsidies expired this year, and as a 59-year-old, I do not qualify for Medi-Cal. My monthly premiums have skyrocketed just when I need them most.
- The Debt: Thanks to your incredible past generosity and my own work, I’ve managed to reduce my medical debt from $355,000 to $288,000.
- Survival: Between SBRT sessions, constant testing, and basic living costs, my resources are being drained faster than I can replenish them. I am working part-time and teaching dance as much as my doctors and my body will allow, but it is a constant struggle to keep up.
### Still Dancing, Still Fighting
Despite the weakness, I haven’t stopped. I am still teaching when I can and documenting my journey on Facebook to stay connected with you all. Your energy is my fuel. My goal is to heal, avoid a transplant if possible, and get back to the music that defines me.
### How You Can Support
Any contribution, no matter the size, goes directly toward these $19,000 "zap" treatments and my daily survival. If you are unable to donate financially, you can still help by:
- Sharing this fundraiser with your dance networks.
- Praying or sending positive energy for my liver function to restore itself.
- Staying Connected—following my updates and joining me at local events when I’m able to host them.
Thank you for being part of my journey for the last three decades, and thank you for standing with me now. We’re going to keep the music playing.
With gratitude and hope,
With love and gratitude,
Rodchata
