BAWL Critique Group Meeting
EVERYONE IS WELCOME When someone asks me what critique groups are for, my favorite reply: Connection and Growth. Connecting with other writers in a variety of genres is so valuable in the often lonely world of writing. Growth happens in so many ways. Different genres and widely different styles challenge our brain and that's the good news! Understanding the rhythm of poetry has helped me understand and improve the rhythm of my nonfiction work. Now I never shy from finding a better word or phase. Moving sentences and ideas around is critical to my writing self. Connecting with the amazing talents who come and go to group gatherings is exciting and encouraging. We have one thing in common. We all want to be better writers. That's what critique groups are for! We critique all genres: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, essay, memoir, and recently, a screen play. This is an especially good group if you haven't been to a critique group before. Discussing your work and your plans as an author is also what we are about. We learn so much from each other. Some of our members write in more than one genre, but all of us are enthusiastic and as eager to hear new work as to be heard by others. Another group member will be glad to read your writing sample if you wish. It's entirely up to you. Many of us have connected with others away from group for a more personal exchange. Bring copies (5-10) so each person in the group can share their ideas and suggestions AND write notes on their copy and return it to you. It's difficult, but please limit your writing sample to 500 words (or less), size 12 or 14 font. Please double-spaced to leave room for comments. Poets usually bring two poems on separate pages. The format of the poems is not restricted since format is often a significant part of the message. We often talk about the business of publishing. Nothing has changed - and still changes - more than what we can do with our finished work. If we do not have enough time to critique everyone's work, those members who had to wait will be first on the agenda at our next meeting. We try to wrap up by 9 p.m., but sometimes go to 9:30 p.m. More than once Starbucks has had to kick those of us who continue "connecting" after the group disbands. * * * * * Visitors are always welcome! * * * * * We love what we do and want to share it with YOU. (Thank goodness, I'm not a poet.)
