This month's BayLISA meeting will be at the usual location at LinkedIn.

This month, Robert Harker of Yahoo! will be discussing Pogo, a command orchestration package developed at Yahoo! :

Pogo is an open source tool developed by Yahoo to manage fleets of servers from the very small to the extremely large. It is based on the idea of constraints that define the order of groups of server to deploy to and how many servers can be out of service at a time. It also allows you to define pre and post procedures for taking hosts in and out of rotation or running shutdown or start up scripts. It is driven from the command line. It provides a useful web based graphical interface for monitoring the progress of the jobs

Robert Harker works at Yahoo Sports as a Service Engineer where they make daily use of Pogo as part of their Hudson based continuous integration code deployment process.

Also, Guy Purcell of LinkedIn will be discussing his recent hardware adventures at LinkedIn:

LinkedIn's migration from startup to pre-IPO to public company has entailed orders of magnitude increases in the size of their server farm. Initially, the servers in the farm spanned just a few models/configurations, and were from a "high-end" vendor. Realities of scale and the need to diversify the vendor list required significant tooling to be able to continue to satisfy the rapid growth of both the user base and the application set for the site. I'll describe some of the challenges LinkedIn encountered in scaling from dozens of servers in a single colo to thousands spread across multiple locations, and outline some of the measures taken to overcome them.

Guy B. Purcell is a system administrator with LinkedIn, and has been with the company since 2007, when there were more employees than servers running the site.

We have time available for one more talk. If you are interested in giving a short presentation (20-30 minutes), please contact blw@baylisa.org with details.

Also, please give us your suggestions on future topics, speakers, themes, venues, sponsors, etc. There is a space in the RSVP form here on Meetup to answer some questions we post... we welcome and greatly appreciate your feedback, as it helps us make BayLISA better for all of you.

Our meetings are scheduled for 7:30pm on the third Thursday of each month, LinkedIn HQ in Mountain View. Note that we are in a different building at LinkedIn as of April 2011.
