Bayonne Chess Society and Club

Join us at Bruno's Pizzeria on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for some excellent chess and delicious food. They've become our main chess hub, where we pretty much pack the place every time we go. So, we added a second night !!! Joe's Pizza on Friday night is becoming our other chess hub. We're there from 7 pm until midnight. We get a good mix of kids and adults there. We get kids at Bruno's, but we get A LOT of the younger kids at Joe's. It's a more centralized location in Bayonne.

They're host us from 5:30 pm to 10 pm. We've been picking up new members from customers, who walk in, see us playing chess, and decide it's something they would like to join in on. Their food is great, but what's even greater is all our members get 25% off food while playing chess. Sorry, you have to be a member and play several games to get the discount. It IS for members only. They're the only venue currently giving us a discount. They have an outside area we use during warm weather too.

The group has 90% of our members on Facebook. There's over 340 adults on the Facebook sister site. No idea how many kids we have. We probably have about 50 members, who have said they have no social media. Add, what we have on Meetup, that's close to 500 members. That's including us weeding out people who join, and don't participate after a few months of being a member. We want participants .. NOT JOINERS. We've weeded out hundreds. They can always return, when they're ready to be actual members. Of course, this doesn't include the members we have in our 'Boardgame Division.'

The Bayonne Chess Society & Club meets 6 evenings a week at different venues. We have a venue that goes from 1pm to 6pm on Saturdays. That's 'OJ Mac's,' We use their huge outside area during the warm weather.

Then we have an afternoon venue 'Mom and Pop Shop Collectibles' across the street from 6 pm to 10 pm. That our 'Combo' event, where we play all types of card games, board games, chess... etc.

Sundays, we have 'Chess at Morris Park.' It's on 47th and Broadway in Bayonne. Title explains itself. We meet there from 1pm to 6pm. We just celebrated 'International Chess Day' a few weeks ago. We had FIDE Master and world renowned chess author of over 88 books Carsten Hanson do a Simul against our members. One member drew.

Mondays, we have a 'Combo' event at The Vic Tavern from 7 pm to 11 pm We get a good mix of players there as well.

We also have spontaneous meetups sometimes on days when nothing is scheduled. Some players can't get enough of chess. We also have a weekly friendly club chess tournament online. All members can play.

At 'Combo Events' members can play whatever they want. You name it, we've probably played it. We just got a jigsaw puzzle board, so, puzzles are not a thing. Some of the things we play are Scrabble, Monopoly, Mah Jongg, Skip Bo, Phase10, Uno, Dominoes, Sorry... etc. Recently, we played Catan, and Ticket to Ride. You bring it... we'll make our best effort to play it.

They can return, when they can actually participate. We're looking for players...not joiners, who never do anything. Clubs don't grow, when people do nothing. We tend to get a lot of kids, which is a nice blend with the adults. It's the kids who tend to be the best chess players these days anyway. Our youngest good chess player is seven years old.

On Sundays evenings, we also have a weekly friendly club chess tournament online. All members can play... unrated... 10/5 time control. Registration is from 7pm to 7:59pm. Games start at 8pm. Must be a member of our online chess. com club to play.
