BBC Tech Meetup - Accessibility and #NoFramework
Details
The first BBC Tech Meetup will be on Tuesday 21st January, from 6:30pm, at our Broadcasting House office in Central London. We're kickstarting our new meetups with three fantastic talks...
# Scroll up! Scroll up! Adventures in Accessible Storytelling - Becky Rush (@Rushlet_) from BBC News Visual Journalism
The BBC News Visual Journalism team have recently experimented with new storytelling formats - including 'scrollytelling' and 3D data visualisations. Experimenting with libraries such as REGL, Three.js and D3, the developers have been pushing the boundaries of the newsroom to create immersive and engaging data journalism.
Becky discusses how some of these ambitious projects were tackled as well as the ways the team made them as inclusive as possible - from translating them into multiple languages to considering the physical impact of animations, screen reader and no javascript experiences, and making anything work in Internet Explorer."
# Accessibility on the iPlayer website - Andy Smith (@AndyMSUK) & Emily Atkins (@Em_Atkins) from BBC iPlayer
Andy & Emily work on the BBC iPlayer website product team, working daily on improving the iPlayer website and adding new features. They are both “accessibility champions” at BBC, passionate about making the iPlayer website accessible to everyone, regardless of their access requirements. They’ll be talking through their team’s approach to accessibility - the team culture, when to think about accessibility, designing for accessibility, development processes, automated testing and, of course, why accessibility is important!
# Don’t build that app! - Luke Jackson (@lukejacksonn)
A deep dive into building web apps without a build step. No Babel, no Webpack, no worries!
Doors will open at 18:30 and the talks will kick off at 19:00. There will be FREE pizza and drinks available! Some of us will also be heading to The Pheonix (https://www.phoenixcavendishsquare.co.uk/) after the talks (around 9pm), to continue the conversations.
RSVP is open! Sign up now if you'd like to join. Please bring ID with you to the event.
This meetup is kindly sponsored by BBC iPlayer & BBC Sounds (BBC Design + Engineering). Interested in working with us? Take a look at the current vacancies at https://bbc.in/hiring
We're expecting this event to be quite popular, so please ensure you're able to join us, before RSVPing. Entry is also subject to capacity - we do over-issue tickets by a percentage to compensate for the inevitable no-shows, so please arrive promptly to ensure you get in.
