Astronomy Night 5/24

Details

Pack a picnic and enjoy a star-filled night on the Travis County's Balcones Canyonlands Preserve. At this FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY EVENT, you'll be guided to our viewing area in the meadow where you'll have an opportunity to view the planets and stars through a high-powered telescope. All ages are welcome to join.
Our program is from 8:45 PM to 10:45 PM and is come-and-go as you please.

Do you have a telescope sitting in your garage waiting to be used? From 8:15 PM – 8:45 PM we'll have a 30-minute telescope tutorial where you can learn more about your telescope and how to set it up.

Arrival Instructions
The event will take place at the Travis County Natural Resources Field Office Off 620 This location is not typically open to the public. You will arrive through the Montebello Gated Community, and you'll drive through our gate, and down our long driveway to the parking area. Gates will open around 7:45.

Things to bring with you:
-Whatever picnic items you would like excluding alcohol and glass containers. Help us keep our preserve clean by taking your trash home with you.
-Blanket/chairs
-Closed-toe shoes
-A flashlight or headlight with a red light setting. If you don't have one, we can provide one for you.
-Bug spray
-No pets, no smoking, and no glass

Night Vision:
Maintaining night vision is important and using a red-filtered flashlight is the best way you can help. Please refrain from using any other lights, camera flashes or cellphones. It can take your eyes up to 30 minutes to adjust to the faint light of the stars. Just one glance at a white light can reduce your ability to see well in the dark.

See you there!
This event is subject to cancellation due to weather. We will send an email the day before to confirm the event.
