Join Travis County Natural Resources for a guided one-mile sensory night hike through Wild Basin. As dusk settles, we'll journey down to the waterfall at the basin of Bee Creek for a meditative moment surrounded by the sounds of the preserve at night. Along the way, participants will experience their own senses adapting to the dark while learning about the wildlife that depends on natural darkness to thrive.
The trail includes some steep and rocky sections that are mildly arduous, so sturdy shoes and water are recommended. Red lights will be provided to help participants navigate safely while preserving night vision.
We'll stop at a mothing station to explore nocturnal insects and the impacts of light pollution, then continue to the overlook for a guided constellation tour. The evening will conclude back at the trailhead where telescopes will be set up for views of deep sky objects.
Please arrive no later than 5:30. If you are tardy, it will be difficult for you to locate the group. You will be guided to the outdoor classroom where we will have a check-in process, you'll sign waivers and receive necessary gear.
Please be sure to bring sturdy shoes and a water bottle. We will provide red light flashlights to preserve everyone's night vision. It's also good to refrain from looking at your phone while on the trail as you will disrupt your own night vision and possibly others. iphones have a red light filter setting that we can help you with when you arrive.
The program will continue after the hike with telescope viewing. Please feel free to bring a foldable chair and snacks. No pets, no alcohol, and no glass.
Please consider car pooling if you are coming with friends. Parking is extremely limited.
