The Beacon Hillbillies: fitness walk through Beacon Hill
Details
Beacon Hill is one of Boston's most historic and topographically challenging neighborhoods, making it ideal for a leisurely walk that maximizes elevation. This 90-minute route takes you from the low-lying Charles Street up the steepest inclines to the summit, where the Massachusetts State House sits.
To maximize your elevation gain, this route focuses on the "North Slope" and the central ridge of the hill, utilizing the steepest vertical streets that run perpendicular to the river.
Phase 1: The Initial Ascent (30 Minutes) Start at 70 Charles St and head east to begin your first major climb.
- Mount Vernon Street: Walk up Mount Vernon St., which is widely considered one of the most beautiful streets in America. The incline is steady and leads you past the Nichols House Museum
- Louisburg Square: Pass through Louisburg Square. While the square itself is level, the streets entering and exiting it offer significant grade changes.
- Acorn Street: Take a quick detour to walk up the cobblestones of Acorn Street. It is narrow, steep, and the most photographed street in the city.
Phase 2: The Summit and Ridge (30 Minutes) Reach the highest point of the neighborhood and traverse the ridge to maintain your elevation before the next set of "reps."
- The State House: Continue to the Massachusetts State House at the top of Beacon Street. This marks the peak of the original "Trimount" area.
- Joy Street: Turn onto Joy Street. The section between Beacon Street and Cambridge Street is one of the steepest vertical drops/climbs in the neighborhood. Walk down to Myrtle Street, then turn around and walk back up to maximize the workout.
- The Black Heritage Trail: While on Joy Street, you'll pass Smith Court,a key site on the Black Heritage Trail.
Phase 3: The North Slope Descent and Return (30 Minutes) Use the parallel streets to wind your way back down toward the flat of the hill.
- Pinckney Street: Head down Pinckney Street. This street offers a long, continuous slope that provides excellent views of the Charles River as you descend.
- Irving and Garden Streets: These smaller "North Slope" streets are exceptionally steep. Weave between them to add "intervals" of climbing and descending to your walk.
- Finish: Loop back to Charles Street and return to your starting point.
And this walk also has a special theme song, "The Beacon Hillbillies".
Come and listen to a story 'bout a man named Jed,
A wealthy tech executive, keepin' his family fed,
Then one day he was lookin' for a view,
And up through the cobblestones came a blue-blood or two.
(Old money, that is... brownstones... luxury tax.)
Well, the first thing you know, old Jed's a Bostonian,
The neighbors all belong to the Athenaeum club,
He said "Beacon Hill is the place I ought to be,"
So they loaded up the Tesla and they moved to Joy Street.
(Charles River, that is... gas lamps... no parking spots.)
The Beacon Hillbillies!
